I’ve grappled with defining happiness in our conversations about success, accomplishment, happiness, and contentment. Happiness is fundamentally an internal emotion—a feeling of well-being that has evolved from my childhood to the present. I’ve come to realize that, like many others, I often attribute my internal state to external factors. This attribution has taken various forms, from favorite foods, movies, and clothes to dream cars, jobs, and houses.
This external search for happiness created a void in my life. I attempted to compartmentalize my life into professional, personal, spiritual, family, and friend’s buckets, only to find that I’m the common denominator, playing different roles in each. Instead of bringing clarity, this approach led to more chaos.
A few years ago, I embarked on a journey to live fully, acknowledging that perfection is an illusion. Embracing differences and appreciating various perspectives became my mantra, although it’s easier said than done. It involves being the last person to speak in a meeting, avoiding hasty conclusions, and ensuring everyone’s voice is heard.
This shift in mindset brought about a sense of contentment, which was initially intimidating. I feared that contentment might diminish my drive to learn and achieve more. However, upon deeper introspection, contentment emerged as a force that brings calmness. It encourages me to think before speaking, questioning whether I share a unique perspective or merely seek to be heard. This practice is an ongoing journey rather than a destination.
Contentment doesn’t stifle my desire for excellence, improvement, or acquiring material possessions. I continue to pursue financial success, a better home, and an improved quality of life for myself and my family. The critical question remains: will I lose my contentment in this pursuit? The answer is ensuring that my quest aligns with my values and involves a thoughtful, principled approach rather than shortcuts.
For me, success is measured by the time each day I feel contented and curious about new things. It’s a journey characterized by continuous learning and personal growth, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive internal state. This perspective has led me to prioritize the ongoing process of self-reflection, mindfulness, and staying true to my values.
